Wrote for special education supplements inside the LIFE section. Articles included an in-depth look at Heritage College, a haven for low-income students and migrant farm workers on an Indian reservation in Eastern Washington and a review of how improvements in printing technology changed textbooks.

ASIA TIMES – Freelance Writer -- 1996 -- 1997
Wrote several business and technology stories for this large daily newspaper circulated in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. Highlights included a story on Chinese-Americans researching Immigration and Naturalization files at the National Archives' Pacific Northwest office and one about Asian Americans in Seattle communicating with Internet cafés in Kuala Lumpur and Kowloon.

Searched flea markets, second-hand stores and pawn shops and dug up histories of discarded war medals. The search was a recreation of a famous author's hunt for the "market price of valor."

Started as intern for one legislative term in state capital bureau, then hired full-time in main newsroom.
